Nicole Perry Intimacy Choreography News 2023
“Perry says there are three parts to intimacy coordination: actor advocacy, communication and choreography. She fosters conversations between and with the actors about boundaries and communicates those to the director. Then, they combine that with the director’s vision to choreograph the scene in a way that honors the actors and tells a story.
”
“She’s there to make it comfortable.”
“Perry now works as a certified intimacy director for films, TV and theater productions.... She joins us to talk about how she makes scenes safe for actors but steamy for the audience.”
“We’ll get into detail about what an Intimacy Coordinator does in pre-production, production, and even post-production. She will take us on a journey about how her background as a dancer and choreographer translated into Intimacy Coordination and Direction and how she applies this to her craft.”

“With intimacy, it is well-choreographed and then we as actors, our job is to imbibe the choreography, just like any dance sequence, and make it believable.”

“It is not just a matter of physically directing movement such as the placement of a hand or the length of a kiss. It is a matter of providing actors the space to honor their own limitations and boundaries when the work requires them to be physically and/or emotionally vulnerable. It gives authority of an actor’s own body and mind back to them. They are a person first, not just a cog in a larger wheel of commercial theater productivity. ”
“In order to understand both what intimacy choreography is and why it’s so important, I reached out to professional intimacy choreographers Dan Granke and Nicole Perry to share their experiences.”

“Perry said that she believes her role in a production is to fulfill a director’s vision of a story
’in a way that respects the actor’s boundaries and allows them to confidently do their job every day.
A huge part of our job is not just creating movement, but creating movement the actor feels confident (about). And that confidence allows them to focus on the acting, which is what tells the story.
(Performers) don’t have to be taken out of the moment by worrying about what they look like, what their scene partner is feeling, etc.’
