Everybody wants a cool job that pays well. So, what does the role of an Intimacy Coordinator pay?
The answer, like almost everything in this industry isβ it depends!
Working on a SAG production is different than working on a student film. Working for an established regional theatre is different than working at a new theatre company. What is important to me is that this work is accessible to those who want it, and the rates I charge reflect that.
My qualifications and experience help inform my rates, but for the most part, they are also set by the industry and my colleagues. It is very important that we do not undercut each other, and the we show everyone in the theatre, opera, dance, and film industries the value of our work.
A few guidelines you can keep in mind as you budget for your theatrical season or film production:
For theatre, your Intimacy Director should be paid comparably to your fight director, music director, and/or dance choreographer. These rates should also be comparable to what you pay your sound and lighting designers.
We should also be hired at the same time as these folks. We are part of your creative team! Please bring on us early, to get the full value of having an Intimacy Director on your show!
For film, your Intimacy Coordinator should be paid comparably to your Stunt Coordinator.
For theatre, prep work is built into my rate.
You are paying not only for me to be in the rehearsal room, but for me to have read, researched, conversed, shopped and/or designed all of the things necessary for my work that day. So, my rate may be a little higher to cover this prep work.
For film, prep work is billed as a separate day
This is industry standard.
